King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands have sent a message of support following an alleged terrorist attack in Nice, France.
“The horrible act of violence this morning in Nice at the Notre-Dame de l’Assomption Basilica has shocked us. Once again, France, the country with which the Netherlands is so connected, has been affected. Our heart goes out to all those affected. We sympathize with those who have lost a loved one and we feel connected to all those who are committed to a peaceful society. ”
Much remains unclear about the attack in Nice earlier today, but several deaths and injuries have been reported after an apparent knife attack, including one victim who was reportedly beheaded. The attack comes just two weeks after the murder of Samuel Paty, a French high school teacher, who was also beheaded. Several world leaders have already expressed their solidarity with France. Now churches in France have been asked to close their doors, and President Macron is currently in Nice to meet with the mayor and police officers involved.
A suspect is currently in custody and is being treated at a hospital for unknown injuries.
Nice was also the scene of a terrorist attack in 2016 during which 86 people died.
