October 29, 2020 (Ezega.com) – Deadly disputes between Afar and Somali ethnic peoples in eastern Ethiopia have left at least 27 people dead and several other injured, officials from the Somali regional state said.
The disputes occurred along their common border areas between Monday and Wednesday and at least 27 civilians were killed, the regional government said in a statement.
Somali Issa tribe representative Mohammed Mussie told DW Amharic service that unidentified gunmen killed two additional people while funeral ceremonies for the dead were being held.
Currently members of the federal security forces are deployed in the area while the causes of the disputes, victims and material damage are being investigated.
More than 100 people have been killed in the last two years in ethnic conflicts and the perpetrators have remained at large, while the regional and federal governments have been indifferent in finding lasting solutions to recurring disputes.
The Somalia regional government said it is providing the necessary support to victims in partnership with the federal government.
The head of the Afar Region Communications Office, Ahmed Kaloita, told the DW Amharic service that ten civilians were killed Tuesday night in the towns of Serkemo and Tele in the region’s Gelealo district by non-armed men. identified.
According to the director, two employees of the Ethiopian Ministry of Education who went to the city of Gedamaitu in the region to witness the official reopening of classes for eighth-grade students were shot dead last Monday.
Ahmed said eight Afari people, including children and women, were killed in similar terrorist attacks on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the National Amhara Movement (NAMA) said government security forces detained several of its members who participated in demonstrations that took place in some towns in the Amhara region on Tuesday.
NAMA in a statement said government security forces harassed and in some cases detained protesters protesting the targeted killings of Amaras people in the Oromia, Benishangul Gumuz and South Nations Nationalities People (SNNP) regions.
The NAMA statement said that the people of Amhara have been denied human and democratic rights during the Abiy led government due to major exclusions from the country’s political structure and economic benefits during the previous regime.
It called for the immediate release of its members and supporters without prior conditions. The government, for its part, said it banned the demonstrations to repel the planned security attacks.
