Windows 10 ‘Sun Valley’ UI Review In Progress, 2021 Release Scheduled – Report

Microsoft is reportedly working on a major interface overhaul with the Windows 10 2021 update. The update will bring new design elements for File Explorer, the Start menu, and even the Action Center. This major update is reportedly codenamed ‘Sun Valley’ and will ship with a major overhaul of the UI. The launch of this new interface will be part of the Windows 10 ‘Cobalt’ release. This next Windows 10 update is expected to ship sometime in the 2021 holiday season.

Windows Central cites company sources saying that Microsoft is looking to carry out a full user interface overhaul with a Windows 10 update in 2021. This major design update will see changes to heavily used items like the Start menu, Center Activities and File Explorer. These elements will morph to present better animations, modern designs, and even have new features.

Microsoft has reportedly dubbed this design review project ‘Sun Valley’ and is expected to ship with the Windows 10 ‘Cobalt’ release in the 2021 holiday season. Internal documentation obtained by the publication describes the project. as “revitalizing and modernizing the Windows Desktop Experience to keep up with customer expectations in a world powered by other modern, lightweight platforms.”

The last design review released by Microsoft was when the first Windows 10 update was released five years ago. Since then, the company has been rolling out some tweaks, but no complete rethinking has been done. This user interface review is reportedly done by the Windows Experiences and Devices team, led by Product Manager Panos Panay.

Microsoft recently released a catalog update for Windows 10 that removed Adobe Flash Player from the system. This update removes the pre-dated flash player, prior to the official end of support on December 31st. The Redmond giant notes that once this update is installed, it cannot be uninstalled.
