Addis Ababa – The Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) negotiating chiefs have condemned US President Donald Trump for interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign nations and disrupting the strong and enduring ties between Ethiopia and the United States. .
President Trump suggested on Friday that Egypt could destroy GERD, during the announcement of a normalization agreement between Israel and Sudan.
“They’ll end up blowing up the dam. And I said it and I’m saying it loud and clear: they’ll blow up that dam. And they have to do something,” Trump said.
In an exclusive interview with ENA, veteran Nile expert and chief GERD negotiator Dr. Yacob Arsano said this statement does not consider the strong, lifelong cooperation between the people and governments of Ethiopia and the United States. .
“Sponsoring Egypt to advance a war against sovereign Ethiopia is simply unexpected, irresponsible and impossible,” he said, adding that it is either irrelevant to the statues and values of the United States. “
Ethiopian partners, members of the US Congress, members of the Ethiopian community in that country have to condemn this in the strongest possible way, stressed Dr. Yacob.
Yacob said that public mobilization is essential to say no to interference by other parties in Ethiopia’s national interest matters and urged all Ethiopians to stand firm to protect their rights.
For his part, Ethiopia’s former ambassador to Egypt, Ibrahim Idris, said that Trump’s statement on the Ethiopian dam should be seen as an individual stance that does not represent the foreign policy of the United States and the majority of members of congress.

Noting the strong association between Ethiopia and the United States in the region, the ambassador stressed that “creating panic here and there is the typical behavior of Egypt to interrupt the ongoing negotiations.”
“Nothing will happen just by making war on the sovereign nation,” he said.
History tells that Ethiopians are very brave who do not hesitate to defend their enemies to safeguard their sovereignty at all costs, the ambassador also affirmed.
Following President Trump’s controversial comment on GERD yesterday, the Ethiopian government revealed that the East African nation will not give in to aggression of any kind, nor does the country recognize a right that is based entirely on the colonial treaties on GERD.
