PS5 apps: Netflix, Spotify, Disney, more streaming apps at launch

The PlayStation 5 will launch with apps for several popular streaming services, including Netflix and Disney Plus, Sony announced Thursday in a PlayStation blog post.

While it appears that not all of the media apps currently available on the PlayStation 4 will arrive on the PS5 in time for its release, several heavy hitters will be ready when the console debuts on November 12:

  • Apple TV (new to the PlayStation family and also on PlayStation 4)
  • Disney Plus
  • Netflix
  • Spotify
  • Twitch
  • Youtube

Sony confirmed that PS5 users will be able to stream songs from Spotify as background music while playing games, just like on PS4. The new PS5 Control Center, showcased in Sony’s PS5 user interface video last week, will make it easier for users to “quickly switch between channels, skip and pause their music,” according to Sony. The company also said that the PS5 will integrate with both Twitch and YouTube. You will be able to “watch or stream your favorite game live and chat live about the best moments with other players” on Twitch through the console, and “stream and share your epic game moments directly to your YouTube channel,” Sony said. .

Additional apps are on the way to the PS5: Amazon Video, Hulu, MyCanal, and Peacock. While we know these apps will appear on the new console, it is currently unclear if they will be ready for release. It’s also worth noting that Sony’s blog post doesn’t mention a number of major media apps that are currently available on PS4, including HBO Max, MLB TV, NFL Sunday Ticket, and Showtime. We reached out to Sony for more details and will update this article with any information we receive.

The PS5 dashboard will feature a Media section that will house all of these streaming apps. Interestingly, Sony said that gamers will “no longer need to download entertainment apps” from the PlayStation Store (as is the PlayStation Store itself, which is built into the PS5 interface rather than being a separate app). It’s unclear whether the console will come with all the apps pre-installed, somehow stream content to the UI, or just download apps to the system the first time players click the associated icons. We have asked Sony for clarification on this.

Sony also revealed Thursday that the PS5 Media Remote will feature dedicated buttons for Disney Plus, Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube. (The company unveiled the remote in April, but had left the buttons blank until now.) The remote, which will be available at launch, will cost $ 29.99.
