Apple deserves some congratulations for adding 15W wireless charging in the form of its new MagSafe charger for the iPhone 12. But in China, a phone maker has revealed a wireless charger that quadruples that speed.
Xiaomi’s Weibo page has just proudly revealed its new 80W wireless charging technology. It’s enough power to charge a 4,000 mAh battery in just 19 minutes, or to 50% in just 8 minutes.
You can see a timelapse video of the technology in action with a special loading of the Mi 10 Pro on a stand.
Xiaomi already offers 50W wireless charging on one of its China-only phones, the Mi 10 Ultra, but 80W surpasses it again and puts it far ahead of the wireless charging capabilities of any other smartphone manufacturer.
While basically all wireless charging phones can charge up to 10W thanks to the Qi universal charging standard, proprietary chargers are higher. The iPhone 12 series can charge up to 15W, for example, while the OnePlus 8 Pro can go up to 30W. Xiaomi’s 80W charge is incredibly high in comparison, beating even the 65W wired charge from the OnePlus 8T.
The problem with higher charge speeds is the heat generated in the battery during the process, which can drastically shorten its life or even damage other components. OnePlus solves this problem by building a fan on its charging stand and dividing its 8T’s battery into two halves that charge simultaneously with a lower wattage. We hope that Xiaomi will make use of at least one of these methods to prevent additional wear and tear on the phone.
We are likely to see this technology actually show up on a phone next year, as Xiaomi has already released both the Mi 10 and Mi 10T this year. It will be interesting to see how other companies that increase their upload speeds react, although we would expect a greater focus on wired upload speeds as that is still the most common way for US and UK users to charge. Their phones.
