The hammer fell hard on Huawei this year and, going forward, it is unclear how long it will be able to keep a straight face amid the political and economic onslaught. In a few days, it will try to prove that it is still working as usual as it features the Huawei Mate 40 series and while the Mate 40 Pro at least looks and sounds premium enough, it may also be one of the latest premium Android phones, yes. not the last. Huawei will be doing it unless things turn in its favor.
It’s not that Huawei stops making smartphones, of course, just that they may not look like the Huawei phones that many have loved. According to WinFuture’s near-complete report, the Mate 40 Pro will run on HiSilicon’s latest Kirin 9000, a 5G-enabled octa-core 5nm processor that by benchmarks outperforms the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. Given restrictions on trade and export, HiSilicon may not be able to make such chips once supplies of components run out.
The report also shows the undeniable premium design of the phone, at least on the front, with a screen that curves almost entirely on the side to give the illusion of having no bezels there. The back has a circular camera bump whose large size is really for display only. There are only three cameras there, linked by what is believed to be a laser AF system plus another autofocus assistant.
In terms of design, the Huawei Mate 40 may look similar except for one telling difference. As Huawei teased, the phone will have an octagonal rather than circular camera design. More curious, however, is the rumor that the lower-end model could have no fewer than six sensors crammed in there.
The phones are expected to ship with Android 10 rather than the latest version, mainly because Huawei is too busy to bother preparing Android 11 for the new phones. Of course, those won’t come with Google Play apps and services and few outside of China could imagine spending a fortune on such a device. Unless of course they’re willing to go the extra mile for what might as well be one of the best smartphone cameras on the market once again.
