Facebook quietly removed Oculus Go game and app support from the Oculus Quest 2 feature set, essentially removing an entire library of games made for mid-tier Go headsets from any advancing new VR adopter.
There wasn’t much official announcement. Instead, Oculus consulted CTO John Carmack signaled the end of support in tweet spotted by the Road to VR team today. In that tweet, Carmack said that he “totally missed the internal debate about backward compatibility” and that the Quest 2 doesn’t offer Go emulation for that.
Facebook, the father of Oculus, announced plans to bring Oculus Go emulation to the original Quest headsets last year, and began reducing support for standalone Oculus Go headsets a few months ago. With all of that put together, Go’s game developers could have had peace of mind that their apps could survive via emulation on headphones that are still supported, but it seems like that won’t be the case.
Since Quest 2 is Oculus’ official entry point, and really the only one, for new VR users, this means that new users will not be able to purchase or download apps for a system that Oculus last year called “a game. “. changer “that” opened virtual reality to many more people “and” helped redefine immersive entertainment. “
