Blizzard has delivered bad news for fans of Starcraft 2. The company has confirmed that it has essentially stopped development in Starcraft 2, confirming that it will no longer “produce additional content for purchase, such as Commanders and War Chests.” That does not mean support for Starcraft 2 It will dry out completely, but when it comes to new content, we’ve reached the end of the road.
It wasn’t long ago that Blizzard made a similar announcement about Heroes of the Storm, but the two situations are still somewhat different. While Blizzard kept some developers Heroes of the Storm to continue producing new content at a slower rate, it seems that Starcraft 2 it’s essentially in maintenance mode, and Blizzard says it will only continue to make seasonal rolls and “necessary balance changes going forward.”
Also, while Blizzard’s Heroes The announcement spelled the end of HGC and, by extension, the end of Heroes of the Storm esports, the professional setting for Starcraft 2 will continue through ESL Gaming and GSL. In a statement to its website, the company says it will not release a fourth quarter balance update from Starcraft 2 just received an update a few months ago, but will continue to send those balance updates “as needed in the future.”
“We know that some of our players have been looking forward to some of the things that we are moving away from, but the good news is that this change will allow us to think about what comes next, not just regarding StarCraft IIbut for the StarCraft universe as a whole, ”Blizzard’s Rob Bridenbecker wrote in this letter to players.
While that may not be what Starcraft 2 fans want to hear, it’s impressive that the game has been supported for the last 10 years. The big question now is whether we will see a Starcraft 3 sometime in the future, or if Blizzard ends up with real-time strategy games. Only time will tell, so we’ll see what happens from here.
