Ethiopia reportedly canceled the planned partial privatization of Ethiopian Shipping & Logistics Services Enterprise.

The Ethiopian Reporter quoted Transport Minister Dagmawit Moges to report that the company has canceled the sale of boats because the revenue generated is less than the revenue that could be obtained from providing the service as a public company.

Ethiopia has 11 ships, but their cargo capacity is not that great compared to other ships, according to Dagmawit Moges.

The decision is also based on consideration of Ethiopia’s security from the point of view of Ethiopia’s sovereignty.

However, the minister indicated that the country’s dry ports could be privatized.

The Company has a monopoly on transit logistics services in the country.

Leading economists in the country had raised concerns about the privatization of Ethiopia’s national assets, including Ethio Telecom and Ethiopian Airlines.

The government has invited two applicants to acquire 40 percent of Ethio Telecom’s shares, which some observers criticized even from an Ethiopia security point of view.
