Weekly poll results: Pixel 5 faces an uphill battle, Pixel 4a 5G heads for disappointment

Last week’s poll shows that there isn’t much enthusiasm for Google’s latest two phones. The reasons are quite varied, although some found things they would love about the new models.

Let’s get this out of the way first: Google’s limited distribution network means that even if you want one, the Pixels may not be available in your country. This has been the case for years and Google has shown little desire to fix the situation.

The most popular choice in the survey suggests 2020 pixels are not worth your money. The most common reason is that: money. The Pixel 5 is too expensive for many (more so in the US, where mmWave support drives up the price).

You can buy a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE for that amount of money and those who reject the FE for its size are pointing to the Sony Xperia 5 II (although that is a lot more expensive). There’s also the new iPhone coming next week, which should cost roughly the same as Google’s phone.

Still, there is relatively strong support for the Pixel 5 – it is only a couple of percentage points below first place in the poll. As mentioned, people like its size, and of course Google’s camera software is a huge draw.

The Google Pixel 4a 5G may be $ 200 / € 130 cheaper and at the same time offer the same chipset and camera as the 5, however the phone is proving difficult to like – it was last in the survey, even behind of the Pixel 4a.

This shows that value for money is hard to balance – the $ 350 4a may not have the best hardware in the world, but it is priced right. Meanwhile, the 4th 5G offers a bigger screen, a faster chipset with 5G, an additional camera and a bigger battery, but that’s not worth the extra $ 150, according to voters.

Perhaps a suitable Pixel 5 XL would have worked better with potential buyers? If nothing else, Google needs to make pixels available in more countries if it is serious about selling phones.
