SOUTH SUDAN: Part of a FIFA-funded stadium in South Sudan collapsed during renovation works.
The world body said on Friday it was in contact with the South Sudan Football Association and was seeking more information about a “minor incident” this week at the Juba National Stadium in the country’s capital.
“Currently, we understand that there are no injuries or injuries that occurred as a result of the incident,” FIFA said, adding that it is “concrete setting.”
The Juba National Stadium is the only international-level stadium in South Sudan and is being renovated with money from the FIFA Forward Program. FIFA gave $ 5 million for the renovation.
Work was halted, although it could be restarted in weeks, said the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Albino Bol. The renovation began last year and is already delayed.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino pledged to fund the renovation during a visit to the conflict-ravaged country in 2016 and was expected to attend its inauguration. The stadium will be converted into a 7,000-seat facility capable of hosting international matches. South Sudan has been playing its home games in neighboring Sudan.
South Sudan is the newest country in the world to become independent from Sudan in 2011, but it has been ruined by civil war for the past seven years. He joined FIFA in 2012.
