We know that Sony’s PlayStation 5 will be able to play an “overwhelming majority” of PS4 titles. But on Friday, the company revealed which games I will not do it work on the new console.

The company published the list along with a blog post on Friday that delves into the details about backward compatibility of the PS5 with PS4 games.
“We are focused on the huge catalog of PlayStation 4 games, and we are pleased that more than 99 percent of PS4 games can be played on PS5 from day one,” writes Sony Vice President of Interactive Entertainment Hideaki Nishino.
As a result, PS5 owners will be able to enjoy more than 4,000 PS4 titles on the new console when it arrives on November 12. If you own the standard PS5, which contains the Blu-ray disc drive, you can simply insert a PS4 game disc into the system to play it.
For PS4 digital games, you can download them to the console through your account on PlayStation Store. “When you log into PS5 with your PlayStation Network account, you will automatically see your library of PS4 content played through the menu,” added Nishino.
There is a good reason to play your PS4 titles on the new console. In some cases, the faster onboard hardware is capable of playing older games with better performance. The games that will get the boost were not revealed today, but Nishino said: “Some PS4 titles will see higher loading speeds on the PS5 console and will also take advantage of Game Boost, offering improved or more stable frame rates. Some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may have higher fidelity. “
One PS4 game on the rise is Ghosts of Tsushima. The game developer confirmed today the PS5 will be able to reproduce the samurai action adventure title at 60 frames per second.
That said, backwards compatibility with the PS5 won’t always be perfect. Sony says that some PS4 titles “may exhibit bugs or unexpected behaviors” when running on next-gen hardware. Some game functionality may also not be available when playing on the PS5.
The other problem is the saved games. Nishino’s blog post mentions a variety of ways that you can transfer PS4 save games to a PS5, including the option to simply bring them in using an external USB storage device. But he also notes: “The ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for intergenerational games.”
So don’t be surprised if Sony still needs time to work out backward compatibility for the console. The company’s support document on the feature also advises users to first try the PS4 game on a PS5 to see if they are happy with the experience before making additional purchases for the title.
