Ahead of the launch of the PlayStation 5 next month, Sony is reportedly making some major changes to the way the PlayStation Store works. The company has apparently been emailing developers saying that later this month, games for the PlayStation 3, PSP, and PlayStation Vita will be inaccessible via the PlayStation Store for web and mobile. Just as well, it appears that PlayStation 4 apps, themes, and avatars are ditching the store’s web and mobile implementations as well.
So says Eurogamer, who claims to have seen and verified these emails. The changes are scheduled to hit the web version of the store on October 19, and the changes will be rolled out to mobile devices on October 28.
These changes are not as bad as they may seem at first glance. Although PS3, PSP and Vita games are disappearing from the web and mobile stores, they are not going to disappear entirely. Eurogamer says that Sony’s email confirms that PS3 and Vita games can still be purchased by accessing the PlayStation Store directly through consoles, as can PS4 apps, themes, and avatars.
Of course, any content you have already purchased will still be available. However, the Eurogamer report says that the current wish list will be discontinued, which means that all items currently on it will obviously be removed as well. If you have a full wish list, then it’s probably a good idea to take note of the games you want to buy elsewhere before it disappears.
So it looks like the PlayStation Store of the future will only show PS4 and PS5 games and media (on mobile and web at least). PS Store support for PS3 and Vita isn’t completely ending yet, but this is indeed a step in that direction for two platforms that seem a bit long.
