Ugandan runner Joshua Cheptegei broke the senior men’s world record of 10,000 meters, while Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey set a new record in the women’s 5,000 meters during the Valencia World Record Day event on Wednesday night in Spain. .

Cheptegei ran a time of 26 minutes 11.02 seconds, more than six seconds faster than the time of 26:17:53 set in 2005 by Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia.

Uganda has enjoyed immense success over the past year. His victory in Valencia came almost exactly one year after he clinched the gold medal in the 10,000 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Doha.

Last month, he broke 16-year-old Bekele’s 5,000 meter record at the Diamond League match in Monaco.

In December, also in Valencia, Cheptegei broke the 10km road record set by Kenyan Leonard Komon 10 years ago.

Letesenbet Gidey, who won his career in 14 minutes 6.62 seconds, breaking the previous mark in more than four seconds.

After the race, Gidey said she was delighted to have fulfilled a dream she had.

“This is a long time dream for me, I am very happy, this is very big for me,” he said.

Both runners used Wavelight pace markings and technology to achieve their impressive results.

Wavelight technology employs the use of flashing lights inside the track to indicate the beat.

The Dutch team NN Running from Cheptegei helped organize the event. Only 400 people were allowed to attend due to strict coronavirus measures in Spain
