The world has a new record of 10,000 meters.
Ugandan long-distance runner Joshua Cheptegei established it.
On Wednesday at the Turia Stadium in Valencia, Spain, Cheptegei broke the 10,000 meter world record held by legend Kenenisa Bekele.
The Ugandan star marathoner clocked 26: 11.0 during NN Valencia World Record Day, cutting Bekele’s record by six seconds.
The 24-year-old’s success marked his fourth world record in less than a year. He recently set a new record of 5000 meters at the Monaco Diamond League match in August.
“This (world record) just lays the foundation (of greatness),” says Cheptegei. An emotional Cheptegei told reporters: “We live in a difficult situation now with COVID, but this event can still give us joy and still give us hope for tomorrow, knowing that we must take precautions to defeat the virus.”
Another record was set in the 5000 meter marathon. Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey is setting the new benchmark at 14’06”62, almost 5 seconds better than her compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba, who held the world record since 2008.
