Now we know why the PS5 is so huge

To be fair, we might have guessed this when it first became clear that Sony was going to drop us an absolute unit from a console with the PS5, but it’s still somewhat remarkable to actually see what’s inside the thing. Sony released a teardown video today, showing what’s underneath those flashy mod-style wings, and we’ve got a pretty definitive answer on why this is so great. It all comes down to chilling.

The console uses several methods for heat management, including a liquid metal thermal conductor for the CPU and GPU and a large exhaust port at the rear. But the real best way to get a picture here is to look at the huge fan inside the thing, which would have no chance of fitting inside a current-gen console:

So if you’re wondering why you might need to rearrange your entertainment center to make room for this, just take a look at that fan to see what kind of equipment is required to keep it cool and quiet.

It’s funny – we were all joking about how big the Xbox Series X (the refrigerator, as it’s called) was, and then Sony came out and revealed an even bigger console. Which is pretty cool, overall: Modern machines produce a lot of heat and I have no desire to melt my console or set my house on fire. I have a feeling that the red ring of death is still hanging over the industry, which is what it was called when a large number of Xbox 360 launches failed due to what was ultimately a cooling issue. Nobody wants to mess with that.

I’ll be curious to see when these things are reduced, as they almost always do with new consoles. Probably two years from now, I’d say my guess, which is when we normally see “slim” versions of consoles appear. Until then, make sure you have enough space in your entertainment center if you plan to play next-gen games, and maybe not get too close to the Xbox Series X, which is reported to get quite hot while running. .
