Zambia defeated Malawi 1-0 in Lusaka on Wednesday to kick off seven days of international preparatory matches for Africa before qualifying for the 2021 Nations Cup resumes next month.
Collins Sikombe scored the only goal in the 14th minute behind closed doors at National Heroes Stadium as he picked up a long pass and circled goalkeeper Brighton Munthali.
Zambia, the only African country to play three games during the FIFA window, faces Kenya in Nairobi on Friday and South Africa in Rustenburg on Sunday.
The victory over southern African neighbors Malawi marked a winning debut as Zambia’s coach for the experienced Serbian Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic.
The 51-year-old has also coached the Rwandan and Ugandan national teams and clubs in Uganda, Ethiopia, South Africa, Tanzania, Sudan and Egypt.
Zambia face Botswana twice during November in their bid to make up for a poor start to qualifying for the Nations Cup in which they were beaten in Algeria and lost at home to Zimbabwe.
