ADDIS ABABA – It was noted at the joint session of the Federation Chamber and the House of People’s Representatives that Ethiopia has recorded remarkable results in terms of peace and stability, especially under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed.
President Sahle-Work Zewde stressed on Monday that Ethiopia continues its effort to flourish peace and stability in South Sudan, Eritrea and Africa in general, and even the international community has recognized and awarded the Prime Minister the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019.
According to her, due to the decisive initiative taken to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea, air transport is open to foster ties between people and help the two nations build trust and foster development.
He further noted that Ethiopia’s role in enshrining peace and stability was extraordinary because the main alliance of opposition groups and protesters accepted Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as a mediator in their political deadlock with the Transitional Military Council (TMC) under certain conditions.
The Ethiopian Herald approached Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) chairman Tigistu Awelu to comment on the attributed efforts. He pointed out that the rapprochement made between the countries of the region is quite decisive for achieving lasting peace.
As for him, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s leadership has shown hope and courage to the rest of Africans.
“To be specific, the efforts made in the region have helped reduce the indirect wars that had ravaged the region. Yes, the region is synonymous with displacement and killings of innocents and instability that leaves millions of people homeless. In my opinion, the visionary measures taken in recent years to end the conflict and broaden the political landscape in the country have allowed Ethiopia to focus on building peace and serenity in the region, “he added.
According to Tigistu, Ethiopia is largely involved in bringing Riek Machar, leader of the opposition faction, to the front and defusing the rivalry for a lasting peace; and ending the long stalemate of “no peace, no war” between Ethiopia and Eritrea, as well as efforts to mediate the border dispute between Kenya and Somalia, etc.
Furthermore, he stressed that Prime Minister Abiy should continue to consolidate more efforts than ever for the development of the region, although much remains to be done to ensure lasting peace and tranquility.
He also said that as part of Ethiopia’s contribution to ensuring peace and stability in the Horn of Africa in particular and Africa in general, the Prime Minister’s leadership has been playing a constructive role that should be well applauded.
