The iPhone 12 could be the Apple smartphone that sees Android fans ditch their phones in favor of an iOS phone.
At least that’s according to a survey by online marketplace SellCell that found that out of about 2,000 Android users in the US, a third (33.1% to be exact) would consider switching to an iPhone 12.
A third of users may not seem like a large number on paper. But Android users, and indeed iPhone, are often terribly loyal to the mobile operating system they choose. This may be due to a simple case of familiarity and having spent a certain amount of money on one ecosystem, or being a staunch fan of certain features that the other platform doesn’t have.
As such, a 33.1% swing is notable for Android users even considering a switch to an iPhone. So why would they consider such a change?
Android abandonment
When asked why they would consider a switch from Android to the iPhone 12, 55.9% of 680 respondents said it was the longer software support iPhones offer that would drive their decision to defect from the Android Army to Team Apple. . The fragmentation in the field of Android smartphones and the lack of uniform user interfaces and software version means that software support for Android devices is possibly a disaster.
Take Samsung devices, for example: there is often a significant wait between the release of the latest version of Android and devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra getting the new version.
About 48% of those surveyed touted better privacy protection as one of the possible reasons to consider a switch to iOS. That’s not surprising given that Apple has been militant in promoting its approach to privacy.
And third, nearly 37% of respondents touted a smaller form factor as another reason to change. Compact Android phones now seem few and far between, while Apple is rumored to have a 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini in the works. People are likely to use a small phone that they can easily use with one hand.
Other reasons cited for the possible swap from Android to iPhone 12 were better prices, 5G connectivity, better features, and a better user interface. We suspect that many Android users would argue about the virtues of Android customization over Apple’s locked UI, and how phones like the OnePlus 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 FE come with a competitively priced high-end feature set.
However, there is no question that the iPhone 12 is shaping up to be an impressive lineup of phones; It will have the aforementioned mini, as well as a pair of 6.1-inch phones and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, at least according to the leaks so far. All four phones are expected to use a new flat-edged design reminiscent of the iPhone 4.
And all phones will make use of the powerful A14 Bionic chip found in the iPad Air 4. Standard iPhone 12 phones will use a pair of rear cameras, like the iPhone 11, and the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will use a matrix of triple camera with an added LiDAR sensor.
There have been conflicting rumors as to whether the iPhone 12 Pro will get a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. The lack of a 120Hz display would make the iPhone 12 lose to some of the major Android flagship phones, but time will tell if that will be a factor affecting the next-gen iPhone’s appeal.
Speaking of time, the iPhone 12 is scheduled to be revealed on October 13, so Android fans eager to switch sides only have a few days to wait.
