The fourth-generation iPad Air went official last month, flaunting a new design language, more firepower under the hood, and refreshing new color options. Apple talked a lot about the capabilities of the A14 Bionic processor that powers the tablet, stating that it offers a 40% increase in raw processing power compared to the A12 Bionic and a 30% improvement in the graphics department. Now the first synthetic iPad Air 4 benchmark has reportedly appeared online and reveals that Apple has packed 4 GB of RAM inside the iPad Air 4 ticking next to the A14 Bionic processor.

Geekbench’s listing, which was first spotted by leaker Ice universe and then confirmed by a trusted Apple leaker L0vetodream, shows the device posting some impressive results on the Geekbench 5.0 benchmarking platform. The list also suggests that the A14 Bionic has six cores and has a 2.99 GHz base clock speed. Speaking of actual synthetic benchmark scores, the iPad Air featured a single-core score of 1583, and while multi-core count stood at 4198.

For comparison, the A12 Bionic chip that powers the third-generation iPad Air achieved a single-core count of 1116 in Geekbench v5.0 and 2758 in the multi-core test. Now that’s a massive performance gain in single-core and multi-core capabilities. In fact, the single-core score of the iPad Air 4 (1583) powered by A14 Bionic technology is higher than the Geekbench v5.0 single-core score (1118) of the 11-inch iPad Pro which is based on the A12Z processor. Bionic and was made official earlier this year.

In other news, Apple’s vice president of product marketing Bob Borchers mentioned that the side-mount fingerprint sensor on the fourth-generation iPad Air was a ‘an incredible feat of engineering’. Speaking alongside Apple Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus on an episode of the iJustine and Jenna Ezarik podcast Same brain, Borchers offered details on how Apple is betting on the fingerprint sensor and how it was an evolution of the existing technology (Touch ID). While the Apple exec speaks highly of the side fingerprint sensor, Samsung and rival brands have been shipping Android smartphones and tablets equipped with such a design for a few years.
