French Defense Minister Florence Parly visited Kuwait on Monday to express France’s condolences for the loss of the late emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, who died Tuesday at the age of 91.
Pakistani President Dr. Arif Alvi will also arrive in Kuwait on Monday to offer his condolences on the death of the Emir.
“Pakistan and Kuwait are united by a close brotherly relationship. Under the leadership of the late Emir, bilateral cooperation took on a new level, “a Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement Sunday.
“The late Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was a sincere and trusted friend of Pakistan. He made an invaluable contribution to bringing the two countries and peoples closer together. His efforts in the bilateral context and for peace and Regional stability will be remembered for a long time, ”the statement said.
His visits follow a delegation of Saudi emirs who arrived in Kuwait on Sunday to pay their respects. His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al Sabah welcomed Saudi officials at the Amir Terminal, Kuwait’s Kuna news agency reported.
The entourage included Prince Fahad bin Sultan, governor of the Tabuk region; Prince Khaled bin Bandar, adviser to King Salman; Prince Meshaal bin Majed, Governor of Jeddah; Prince Turki bin Talal, Governor of Aseer; and Prince Faisal bin Salman, governor of Medina.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the vice president and ruler of Dubai, also traveled to Kuwait on Sunday to offer his condolences on behalf of the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa, to Sheikh Nawaf.
Last week, regional leaders from Jordan, Egypt, Oman, Bahrain and Iraq came to pay tribute to the former ruler, known as the “prince of diplomacy and humanity,” during his tenure, which began in 2006.
Others also came to offer their condolences on Sunday, including US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and Britain’s Prince Charles. Kuwait’s Foreign Minister and Acting Defense Minister, Dr. Ahmed Nasser Al Mohammed Al Sabah, also received the Secretary General of the Arab League, Amed Aboul Gheit, and the United Kingdom’s Secretary of Defense, Ben Wallace, who arrived with a delegation on Sunday.
During a reception at the Foreign Ministry diwan, the two countries reflected on their strong ties and discussed areas of common interest.
