With all eyes on the transfer market, football itself decided to take center stage this Sunday. Shocking, I know!
Ross “Bane of Liverpool” Barkley, on loan from Chelsea, at Aston Villa is off to a good start, with one goal and two secondary assists (and at least three major missed opportunities) when Villa beat Liverpool 7-2.
No, that is not a typo. It is the first time a defending Premier League champion has conceded seven goals, and the first time that has happened to a top flight champion from England since 1953.
Villa scored early and frequently, and could have been three up in thirty minutes. Instead, it was just two, and former Chelsea player Mo Salah retired one for Liverpool to make it 2-1 just after the half-hour mark. But because we are in 2020, the game has not yet developed as one might expect. Villa scored the next three, off a Barkley attack early in the second half, making it 5-1. Salah retired another, before Jack Grealish added one via detour (Villa scored at least three via detours) and one more without one. Villa also hit the post for good measure.
And here we all thought that Spurs’ 6-1 win against 10-man Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier, again, wasn’t a typo, it was going to be the most ridiculous score of the day. United took the lead in this (another Bruno penalty) after just 32 seconds, but the Spurs scored twice in the next five minutes, then Anthony Martial was sent off after reacting to a sharp elbow from Erik Lamela and all wheels really . fell off Ole’s bus.
Will Solksjær have the opportunity to put them back on or will Mauricio Pochettino be given the iron during the international break?
Those two ridiculous games overshadowed West Ham’s equally ridiculous 3-0 win over Leicester City at the King Power, just a week after Leicester beat Manchester City 5-2 at the Etihad.
Is this the best season yet?
The result of all this is that Everton of Carlo Ancelotti and John terry Dean Smith’s Aston Villa leads the league, both perfect in four and three games, respectively, in the October international break. Meanwhile, Manchester City are down at 14th and United at 16th, both with a game in hand, but still fun. What is this, the 1970s?
Obviously, they are early doors, but Chelsea with 7 points and in seventh place is doing well so far.
