Gary Neville says Edinson Cavani’s imminent arrival at Manchester United is an exciting and intriguing transfer, but he questioned the process behind the deal and called the club’s approach in this window “not good enough.”
Speaking in co-comments when Tottenham smashed Manchester United in the first half of their Super Sunday clash at Old Trafford, Neville reiterated his belief that United’s failure to act faster in the transfer window has left them on par with its rivals.
“Manchester United came out of the confinement with class. Then they finished third in the league. There were a couple of months before the start of the season where I think they took the victory loss when they did not strengthen,” he said.
“And now they are fighting on the last day of the deadline to do something about it. It is not good enough. All the other clubs have done their thing.”
Neville: Cavani will be welcome
Cavani is a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain earlier this year and the Uruguayan is approaching a two-year deal to move to Old Trafford.
The forward has been one of the most prolific forwards in Europe for the past decade and Neville is optimistic about what he could achieve in the Premier League.
However, Neville, who has criticized the fact that United has not attracted more players so far in this window, suggested that the decision to sign the 33-year-old is probably not part of United’s plan in this transfer window.
“They need a forward, they need a forward,” Neville said. “My emotion when I found out was the feeling I had when Radamel Falcao signed, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic signed, when Odion Ighalo signed. It’s very last minute, it came out of nowhere.
“There is an element of emotion in it, an element of intrigue, emotion because he is one of the best forwards in the world in the last five to 10 years, and you hope he can come out here. [at Old Trafford] and set fire to the stadium and the Premier League.
“There is also an element of how we ended up here?
“Manchester United, two or three months ago, had had a great period of coronavirus, the club had acted with a lot of class, Marcus Rashford’s work, he finished third in the league and you thought, ‘well, that’s the closest that they can arrive [Manchester] City with this team that they currently have, and if they can go and get three or four signings, they can potentially close the gap this season.
“We are here on the eve of the transfer deadline and nothing has been done apart from Donny van de Beek, who at the moment cannot enter a packed midfield.
“Cavani will be welcome. He is different from the other forwards, I hope he is fit, shooting. He has always worked hard, he has always had a great attitude and work ethic, so I don’t think there is any doubt about that. For a swan song or a bounty, I think he has more to it. We had great fights against him with England. I don’t think he comes up with anything other than trying to prove himself.
“It’s just a case where I don’t think it was in the strategy, I don’t think it was in the plan, and I certainly don’t think it could have been because something like this couldn’t have been fully sustained as long as it has been.”
