Sean Patterson is not concerned that Donald Trump has been hospitalized with coronavirus because he believes what the president tells him.
“It’s a hoax. There’s no pandemic. Like Trump said, how many million die from the flu?” Said the 56-year-old trucker outside the early voting station in St Joseph, Missouri, a stronghold for the president.
But then Patterson pauses and contemplates the possibility that Trump actually has Covid-19.
“If it’s sick, they planted it when they tested it. It’s what they did to me when I went to the hospital because my heart was beating too fast. Two weeks later I caught a cold, ”he said. “It is political. I don’t trust the United States government at all. Who are they to demand personal safety? I listen to Trump. “
At the end of a tumultuous week, even by the standards of one of the most turbulent presidencies of modern times, the disturbing, if not completely unpredictable, news that the president contracted coronavirus sparked alarm, confusion and frustration in the heart of Trumpland.
St Joseph, a former border town where outlaw Jesse James met his bloody end, voted overwhelmingly for president four years ago. Polls say Missouri will be on its way again next month. But with Trump fighting in key states, the news that he has fallen ill from Covid-19 shook an election already battered days before by the most unworthy presidential election debate in history.

What if Trump is incapacitated?
Under the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution, the president himself, or the vice president with the agreement of eight cabinet officials, supported by Congress, can request the vice president, in this case Republican Mike Pence, to take office as Acting President.
Adopted by the United States Congress in 1967 after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the 25th clarified a vagueness in the constitution about succession in the event of resignation, death, or impeachment conviction.
The least complicated part of the amendment is Section 4, which stipulates what would happen if Donald Trump were indisputably physically weakened, either by injury or ailment, so much so that he could not communicate but remain alive.
So the vice president is in charge unless and until the president recovers.
If Pence is also unable to take over, then under the constitution, powers are delegated to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in this case Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic congresswoman from California. In the United States Congress, Democrats currently control the House, while Republicans are in the majority in the Senate.
