Facebook merges Messenger with Instagram direct messages

Photo-sharing platform Instagram began on Wednesday implementing the option to connect Instagram direct messages with Messenger. It means that now you can send messages to Messenger people from Instagram, and vice versa.

Facebook announced the update in a blog post. The feature will be shown to some users when they open the app. Users can still keep their Messenger and Instagram direct messages separate if they wish.

However, if the user updates, the somewhat simple messaging experience on Instagram will become very similar to Messenger. This means that Instagram users will get features like message forwarding and customizing chat threads with custom nicknames and colors.

Lots of new features, including selfie stickers, Watch Together (which lets you watch fashion videos with friends), and Disappearing Mode, which lets you set messages to automatically disappear after a certain amount of time has been added . Facebook said some features will hit Instagram first and will hit Messenger shortly after.

Merging makes it easier for people who use only one of those platforms to communicate and communicate with people on the other platform, without the need to download a separate application. Also, Instagram messages and calls to Instagram users will remain in the Instagram app.

In his remarks in early 2019, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned end-to-end encryption as one of the key benefits of merging all of Facebook’s messaging platforms. (WhatsApp and Messenger already support end-to-end encryption, but Instagram does not.)

However, Facebook did not mention encryption as part of this update. According to Wired, the company plans to add end-to-end encryption to Instagram in the future, but there is no clear timeline yet.

Facebook will introduce this update to users in the coming months.
