Three rockets landed near a US-led coalition military base outside the Erbil International Airport in Iraq’s semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan on Wednesday night, CNN reported, citing US Defense Ministry officials.
There are no reports of casualties yet. It was not immediately clear whether US troops, the Iranian opposition group or both were the target of the attack.
Unidentified militants fired six rockets from a village located between the Iraqi army and Kurdish security forces Peshmerga in the west of the Kurdish regional capital of Erbil, according to the Xinhua news agency.
Three of the rockets were destroyed in the air by US air defense weapons. The other three landed near the international coalition base outside the Erbil airport.
On September 23, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Iraqi leaders that the United States plans to close its embassy in Baghdad unless the government prevents Shiite militias from targeting diplomatic missions in Iraq.
