The launch of Apple’s iPhone 12 is drawing near and while recent leaks have exposed some disappointing design decisions, a massive update has now been revealed.
Prolific Apple tipster John Prosser has confirmed that Apple will double the entry-level storage capacity of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max to 128GB, which addresses the much-criticized 64GB starting point in the iPhone 11 Pro models. But it’s not all good news .
While iPhone 12 Pro models will get this (long-awaited) storage increase, Prosser state that the new iPhone 12 mini (“Definitely the final brand name”) and iPhone 12 will be stuck with 64GB of storage. They will also have the same 64/128/256 GB upgrade options as the iPhone 11 lineup, missing the top level of 512 GB available for the iPhone 12 Pro models.
In addition to this, Prosser reiterates that Apple will announce the new iPhones on October 13, while “Apple’s first shipment of the latest iPhone 12 units will go out to distributors on October 5.” Given Prosser’s high success rate in leaking Apple releases in 2020, and the near consensus among leakers around this date, you should add it to your calendar.
Will the big jump in storage rekindle the excitement in Apple’s new iPhones? It’s a nice (perhaps vital) move following revelations that the iPhone 12 range will have smaller batteries, retain its large screen notch, and potentially treat only the iPhone 12 Pro Max as a ‘real flagship’ with the iPhone 12. Smaller pro tipped to miss top-notch 5G camera and upgrades.
Of course, Apple fans will have a new angular chassis design to look forward to, as well as relatively small price increases compared to other 5G iPhones. But, for my money, the real star of the show will be the iPhone that Apple won’t release until early next year.
