Sega’s Yakuza series has been telling gangster stories since the days of PlayStation 2, but it only gained popularity during the current generation of consoles. Breaking from its PlayStation roots, the franchise has gone cross-platform, with entries receiving PC and Xbox releases.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon will continue this trend when it hits and kicks its way to consoles and PC on November 10. Before reserving this PC game, let’s find out if your computer is powerful enough to contain the wrath of the dragon.
Why the Yakuza: Like a Dragon Bass Drum?
Like its predecessors, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a crime story set in a fictional modern Japanese city. As the main character, you will walk the streets of Isezaki Ijincho and participate in various activities. This includes playing arcade games, bowling, eating at restaurants, and of course, completing side stories. While not crucial to the main plot, the sub-stories provide much of the show’s notorious humor and pathos. Playing Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the closest you’ll get to visiting Japan without having to go there.
The game departs radically from previous entries by ditching real-time beat-’em-up combat for a turn-based battle system similar to those found in RPGs. Unlike most RPGs, Like a Dragon allows you to attack enemies with objects in the environment, a staple of the Yakuza series. Since you will now fight with a group of four people, you can use the group aids to deal maximum damage to enemies. Despite the different combat system, the game seems as wild as ever.
The series’ long-time protagonist Kazuma Kiryu steps aside to make room for a new hero: Ichiban Kasuga. Although a former Yakuza member like Kiryu, Kasuga differs by being a more abrasive and emotional character. Alongside the new allies, Kasuga also joins veteran Yakuza characters like Goro Majima and even the aforementioned Kazuma Kiryu.
