Can’t wait for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 to arrive? A new free game called Genshin Impact might be just the thing to help you while you wait for Nintendo’s long-awaited sequel to hit your console.
Clearly inspired by the Nintendo Switch epic (if not a total scam in places), Genshin Impact is a free-to-play open-world RPG that puts you in the heart of a gigantic anime adventure to save the world.
In the video below, you can see the visually obvious resemblance between Genshin Impact and Breath of the Wild.
Free to play fair
But the two play quite differently. For starters, Genshin Impact offers online cooperative play for up to four players and a game loop that has the most in common with an MMO: think about character leveling, multiple currencies, and materials.
The free nature of the game is also very transparent. Made by developer Mihoyo, the loot box law in his native China is vastly different from the one in the west, which means it’s very straightforward with nature and the likelihood of your rare items dropping. This means you can better plan how to spend your ground coins to maximize your chances of a better random reward.
Despite its ‘gacha’ gaming roots, the combat is free-flowing and relatively deep, with a combo system that makes it look more like recent Final Fantasy games than the autobattlers of the genre.
It’s available to download for free on PS4, iOS, Android, and PC now (via its own launcher), and it’s definitely intriguing. It also features cross-play on those platforms, with cross-save on PC and mobile devices, making it a really ambitious free Zelda clone. Give it a spin.
