The Google Pixel 5 is expected to land on September 30, so we’re very close to launch now. But Google Japan’s Twitter account apparently thought the phone had already been launched, as it briefly posted some important details.
The tweet was removed, but not before 9to5Google discovered it, and it included partial images of the Pixel 5 from the front, the clearest of which can be seen below.
As you can see, the phone has a hole-punch camera in the upper-left corner of the screen, and what appears to be a full-screen design, although since we can’t see the bottom edge, we can’t be sure. there is no chin there.
The design matches previous leaks and looks much more like the Google Pixel 4a than the Google Pixel 4, the latter of which has a large bezel above the display.
Design aside, the tweet mentioned that the Google Pixel 5 supports 5G (as expected) and that it costs ¥ 74,800 in Japan. That’s around $ 710 / £ 555 / AU $ 1,010, and while a price conversion is likely not very accurate, it’s also noticeably less than the ¥ 89,980 launch price (roughly $ 855 / £ 665 / AU $ 1,210) of the Google Pixel 4 in Japan.
Leaks have consistently suggested that the Pixel 5 would cost less than its predecessor and this pretty much confirms it.
Where is the XL?
Aside from a mention of “pro-grade photography,” the tweet didn’t reveal much else, but the Google Pixel 5 XL in particular wasn’t mentioned, which could mean no such phone exists.
While there have been rumors of a Pixel 5 XL, we haven’t heard as much about it as the standard Google Pixel 5, so there were questions about whether such a phone would be released.
That it is not mentioned here does not necessarily mean that it will not come, but it is more evidence pointing in that direction.
