Kate Middleton’s denim dress has a sustainable twist

This weekend, Prince William and Kate Middleton met Sir David Attenborough, the English broadcaster and natural historian, in Kensington Palace Gardens, after the screening of the upcoming Attenborough documentary. David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet. Subsequently, Attenborough met the three children of the Duke and Duchess, Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte, and presented Prince George with a giant shark tooth fossil. The tone of the meeting, said the official Instagram page of the royal couple, was very focused on what both can do to continue protecting the natural world. And Middleton used his fashion choice to amplify this message, as his denim dress had a sustainable edge.

For their photos taken together, the Duchess wore a belted denim dress by Gabriela Hearst. Called the Marley dress, it’s a piece from the designer’s pre-fall 2020 collection and is crafted from repurposed denim. Designing before fall is generally a greener process for the overall designer, Hearst says. “Pre-fall is always one of the most sustainable collections we make, because we work from sketches and samples,” she said on her website. “We didn’t even develop a sample, because we have a lot of pre-existing materials.” And it seems like she carried that message through production, as Middleton’s dress is made entirely from recycled fabric. In Hearst’s broader fall offering, coats and bags were also made from scraps of repurposed Turkish kilim and knits produced from recycled cashmere yarn. Middleton’s dress was certainly an outfit choice on the subject, given the reunion and documentary event, not to mention an overall smart and beautiful purchase option.
