A mobile version of Dynasty Warriors designed for iOS and Android was announced during a special 20th anniversary livestream event at Tokyo Game Show 2020. Koei Tecmo also announced a closed beta for Japan only, with apps opening immediately after the presentation.

Titled Shin Sangoku Musou in Japan, producer Akihiro Suzuki described the game as “the ultimate action game for smartphones” and allows players to “easily enjoy the exciting action of Dynasty Warriors and the great story of the Three Kingdoms.” In addition to the main story mode, Suzuki said that Dynasty Warriors for mobile devices will also include new game modes that include “cooperative play with other users” and “asynchronous versus matches.”

The game was played live during the presentation, showcasing the single-player story mode. After choosing a location on the map and locking in a team of three fighters, Suzuki demonstrated that the game can be played in both landscape and portrait, instantly switching from one to the other by turning the phone. Movement is controlled via a virtual touch panel, while attacks and special abilities are performed via on-screen buttons. Players can switch between their three fighters at any time by tapping their on-screen portraits, plus they will be joined by an AI partner for combo attacks, one of which featured a cut-scene in which a woman grappling with a soldier with a chain . The main menu also revealed two other modes, Free and Conquest.

Suzuki also demonstrated the “gacha” feature, seen in many other Japanese mobile games, where players spend virtual money to unlock new random fighters, as well as concept art for characters.

Details on how to sign up for the closed beta were revealed via the game’s official website and Twitter account. Applications will be accepted until Monday, October 5, and the beta will be available from October 8 to 12. Although the beta and full game are currently limited to players in Japan, a representative for Koei Tecmo told IGN that a western release could be considered at a later date.
