iOS 14: Space Shooter ‘Phoenix 2’ Offers Playable Demo via App Clips

One of the new features that came to iOS 14 is called App Clips. Apple describes App Clips as a “small part of your application” that can be made available to users at the right time.

App clips focus on finishing a task quickly. An ideal App Clip experience allows users to open and complete a task in seconds.

Instead of requiring a download from the App Store, they can be uploaded and run through Safari, and once the experience is done, the user is offered a full download of the app. The earliest examples given by Apple include take-out apps, scooter rental apps, or apps for setting up a device for the first time.

Game developer Firi Games has implemented an application clip for its Phoenix 2 space shooter game. The application clip can be played by visiting your Phoenix 2 website on an ‌iOS 14‌ device and tapping “Play” on the banner that appears at the top of the screen.

The Phoenix 2 intro is also available as an app clip. App clips is a new feature of ‌iOS 14‌ that allows you to run a part of an application without downloading it from the ‌ App Store‌. Try it for yourself by tapping the ‘play’ button on the banner at the top of this website (requires Safari on ‌iOS 14‌; banner won’t show if you already have Phoenix 2 installed).

After a few moments of downloading the assets, the introductory level to Phoenix 2 appears as a native application clip on your device.

The demo plays as a native application but without any application installation. Once you are done with the demo, a link to the ‌App Store‌ is available for the full game [Free]. TouchArcade wrote about the experience and thought that the “frictionless experience” for game demos had great potential for game discovery on the ‌App Store‌.
