App Clips are the new iOS 14 alternative to save time to traditional app downloads.
These mini versions of web-based applications give you access to a selected function of an application, without having to wait for a full download. A single application can have multiple “clips” for its different functions.
Think of it as a preview or a shortcut. App clips give you the option to test an app before downloading it or using part of an app that you don’t want to use more than once. If clutter on your iPhone bothers you, App Clips can help you avoid wasting more space.
App clips can appear when searching for a business on Maps or in links found in text messages or in Safari. In the future, Apple claims that it will be able to open App Clips by scanning QR codes that it finds in real-world companies. But for now, only a handful of websites offer them.
All you need to use App Clips is iOS 14 and an internet connection.
How to use App Clips on an iPhone with iOS 14
On Google Maps
To use an application clip, you will first need to find a company or website that uses them. Unfortunately, it is not always obvious who uses them or how to find them.
The Panera Bread restaurant chain is an early adopter. Here’s an example of how to find and use your application clip.
one. Open Maps, specifically the pre-installed application called “Maps”, not Google Maps, and search for the nearest Panera Bread.
two. Once you find one, select it so that its information page appears at the bottom of the screen.
3. Click on “Order food.”
Four. This will bring up a preview window that says “Panera Bread”, along with a large “Open” button. Tap “Open.”
5. You will be taken to the clip of the Panera application. This is a small section of its official application that has now been downloaded to your iPhone.
Select what you want to buy and press “Continue”.
6. From there, you can pay with Apple Pay.
7. When you’re done, you can close the application clip like you would any other application.
In Safari
In Safari, application clips will appear as banners at the top of your browser window. For example, you can test the new Kontax Cam camera app this way.
one. Go to kontax.cam in Safari on your iPhone.
two. Look for the white banner below the search bar that says “Open in Kontax Cam application clip.” Press “Open”.
3. When the application clip preview window appears, press “Open” again.
Four. Give Kontax access to your camera and you can test out some of Kontax’s filters and even take a test photo with it.
To quickly reopen an app clip you’ve used before, head over to your app library, which is another new feature in iOS 14.
5. Scroll to the right on the home screen until you reach the “App Library”.
6. Look under “Recently Added” in the upper right corner of the library and tap on the clip you want to open.
How to delete app clips
App clips are automatically deleted after 30 days, but you can delete them sooner if you want.
one. Open the Settings app and scroll down to “App Clips.” Play it.
two. Select the application clip you want to delete or press “Delete all application clips” to delete them.
