After 81 years, Ferrari has a pretty good idea of what it is doing. But that does not mean that the company is not open to suggestions, especially if it has enough money to implement them. Just look at the new Omologata, a truly impressive single version of the 812 Superfast.
The Italian automaker unveiled the stunning bespoke supercar in a press release on Friday. The vehicle, which was commissioned by a “demanding European customer”, is only the 10th unique GT that the brand has built for a customer since 2009.
With its powerful front-mounted V12, the 812 Superfast was already a wonderful tribute to Ferrari’s racing heritage. But the Omologata – Italian for “homologation” – could be an even more effective homage. That’s because the brand has scrapped the entire somewhat brutal exterior of the base vehicle, with the exception of its windshield, and replaced it with something more elegant and refined. The result is a long-nosed vehicle reminiscent of the brand’s sleek mid-century race cars, representing as positive a partnership as any automaker could hope for.
But the curvy body of the Omologata isn’t all that sets it apart from the standard 812 Superfast. It also features a striking racing-inspired livery, based on three layers of Rosso Magma. This completely unique undercoat gives the car a sleek metallic shine and is adorned with a number seven racing gum. Inside the car, it is not much different from other modern Ferraris, but features a ‘cracked paint’ effect on the dash, steering wheel and center console, along with a four-point harness, just like the brand’s classic racers. .
Unsurprisingly, intact is the imposing transmission of the 812 Superfast. That’s because whatever qualms one might have with its exterior, few would quibble with a 6.5-liter V12, capable of producing 789 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque. It is almost certain that this car will be for more than a show.
It’s not known how much the Omologata cost, but we’re guessing it’s slightly more than the 812 Superfast’s $ 335,000 asking price. Unfortunately, this is a one-time commission from a wealthy buyer, so don’t expect to see another example ever again. But hopefully Ferrari will take an element or two of its magnificent design.
