Now that iOS 14 lets you change the default app that handles email on your iPhone, it might be time to ditch Apple’s Mail app and find a shiny new replacement. These are our favorite email apps for iPhone, tested and compared so you can find the best email app to use on your iPhone.
Apple Mail

For many people, Apple’s Mail app is the one they’ll use for the simple reason that it’s already available when they buy a new iPhone. Until now, there have been other motivations for using Mail as well, as iOS always used it by default when clicking links to create new messages. Well, now that iOS 14 allows users to select the default app, Mail has to prove itself. So what does it have to offer?
The interface is clean and seamless, with the Inbox allowing the inclusion of multiple email accounts or keeping them all in individual accounts if you prefer. Swiping the emails in the list will give you quick access to commands as archive or unread, and these can be set to your personal taste. However, you will need to leave the app and go to Settings to do so, which feels embarrassingly out of date in 2020.
Email creation gives you the option to include media from your iPhone or cloud service that you have plugged into your device, plus you can scan documents or even draw on screen if that’s your problem.
Dealing with messages that have arrived basically comes down to replying, moving the message to a folder, flagging it, or filing it. There are no management features like automatic reminders or the ability to snooze emails to come back at a pre-set time.
Notifications are pretty minimal too, either on or off, rather than the more granular controls provided by the apps listed below.
The iOS version of the Mail app is an example of an app that is much better on Mac than iPhone and iPad. On the Mac, you can create Smart Folders, which is a great way to organize your inbox by rules so you don’t miss an important email (and can ignore the unimportant stuff!). Unfortunately, these smart folders are not transferred to the Mail app. on the iPhone. Fortunately, your VIPs do, but that’s the only useful feature shared by both apps.
Simply put, Mail looks like what it is, an app that hasn’t had to put in much effort because it’s Apple’s favorite child. To be honest, anyone with common sense should drop it like a stone and pass one of its rivals on this list, as its creators have been hungrier and much more innovative for a long, long time.
Gmail

Google’s email service is one of the most popular, so it is not surprising that the Gmail application is a mature and well-designed application. You can set up multiple accounts, not just Gmail, but also Hotmail, iCloud, Yahoo, or other popular services, and have emails displayed in individual or universal inboxes.
There’s a dark mode available, and definable swipe actions let you archive, move, or even snooze messages so they reappear when you have time to deal with them. Creating labels means you can further sort emails into custom folders, and when you compose new messages for people, you can make use of the smart compose feature that suggests the next word based on the way you normally write.
When you are ready to send the message, you can choose to do it immediately or schedule it to be sent at a different date or time. If the content of the email is confidential, there is also a confidential mode that sets expiration limits and requires access codes for the recipient to access the information.
Spark – spark

Spark is one of our favorite email apps as it not only supports multiple accounts and a universal inbox, it also has a smart smart inbox that classifies incoming mail into various types. These separate newsletters and promotional items from those sent by real humans, placing the latter above the former. You can also pin particular emails, which then stay at the top of the list until you unpin them.
Notifications are reduced, so you only get alerts when a new message arrives from someone you know. This means no more distractions from companies telling you about their latest sale. You can also schedule emails to be sent at a later date, and Spark will remind you of important emails that you have not yet replied to.
Customizable swipe actions give you quick and easy ways to manage what you do with messages, plus Spark also supports multiple signatures so you can send personal or professional signatures to each email. The application can handle a wide range of attachments, but it also has the ability to link with a number of services and applications, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud Drive, and others, to save attachments directly to your online storage.

Microsoft has been a huge player in the email space for a long time. Outlook is trusted by many Windows users, but you don’t have to use that operating system to take advantage of what this application has to offer.
As standard with modern email services, Outlook allows you to bring all of your email accounts into one application, and similarly to Spark, it provides a focused Inbox that only shows what it considers to be important emails. that interest you. You can still access the others, of course, and if you don’t like Focused Inbox, you can turn it off.
Swipe actions are definable, with a good selection of options available, and you can link cloud storage services directly to the app so you can share or download files directly to and from them. Outlook provides support for Siri shortcuts, your favorite calendar apps, and you can also incorporate productivity apps like Evernote, Slack, and Trello into your workflow.
You can set the level of notifications you receive, from everything to just your favorite people, and now you can select from the app which browser and which map apps open the links within emails. Boomerang

Another popular email service that offers a wide variety of features is Boomerang. With a simple and minimalist design, it is a friendly application to become familiar with. Boomerang supports multiple accounts, but on a more limited list than some of its rivals. At the time of writing, you can use Gmail, G Suits, Outlook.com, Office 365, and Microsoft Exchange accounts, but sadly not iCloud, Yahoo, or other services.
However, if you have a supported email address, you’re in luck. Boomerang has many configuration options, with swiping right on an email in the inbox that triggers one of several possible actions, while swiping left opens a menu from which you can choose one of the five commands, including Archive, Move, Snooze or Delete. One of the simplest, but most useful, features is that swiping left and right while in an open email will take you to the previous or next message, so you don’t have to go back to your inbox or stretch the controls at the top of the page like in Apple’s Mail app.
At the top of the page in an open email, you will see several options, one of which is the Boomerang icon. Tapping this opens a full menu in which you can select a variety of times or dates this email will return to your inbox as a new item. Essentially it’s a reminder, but the configurable nature makes the feature very useful, plus there’s a setting that will disable it entirely if you reply to the message at any time.
Add to this integration of Google Calendar and Outlook Calendar, a voice assistant for controlling and working with the application, useful analysis of your writing style when composing emails, support for Gmail alias accounts, email scheduling, and a great feature called Brief Me that provides shows a summary of the things you need to do that day, and you can see that Boomerang is a very impressive way to handle email.
