It’s only been a couple of months since Instagram launched Reels as a competitor to popular TikTok. Although there have been a following on the platform, Reels has failed to win over TikTok followers as originally expected.
And in an attempt to mount a serious challenge to the competitors, Reels are becoming more user-friendly. Now you can create clips up to 30 seconds long on reels. You can also set a 10 second countdown timer. For easy editing, clips can be trimmed or deleted as required.
Instagram has introduced these changes based on general feedback that the editing controls or the many features that TikTok offers are not available on Reels.
Instagram now hopes that people who have left TikTok no longer feel the need to complain about Reels.
The new touches
Reel videos were so far limited to 15 seconds. It has now been increased to 30 seconds, giving users the leeway to develop their creations more vividly. Of course, users can post even longer videos to the main Instagram feed.
On TikTok, users can post videos that run for one minute. Reels clearly seem to have settled for the middle ground.
Additionally, Reel creators can extend the timer by 10 seconds while recording their clips.
Reels are also looking to tweak their native editing tools, with improved clipping and deleting options.
Respond to comments
Instagram said that the option to create 30-second reels and new editing features is rolling out today, and the timer extension will be available in the coming days.
It’s clear Reels has had to come out with these tweaks because it may not have taken off in the way Instagram might have anticipated.
It’s equally a good sign that Instagram is responding to comments and isn’t ready to sit back and wait for things to happen on their own.
