Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited the Koysha hydroelectric project being built around the Omo River on Saturday.
Currency 37% of the project is completed. The project was recently reactivated after significant project delays; it is expected to generate 6,400GWH per year. So far, it has created 4,000 jobs and will continue to employ more as the project progresses. Together with our new Koysha project, the dam will be a critical catalyst to positively transform the area, ”according to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s tweet.
Aiming to illuminate millions of homes and provide power for its growing economic activities, the Ethiopian Government has been investing heavily in hydroelectric projects and wind farms in recent years, including the more than $ 5 billion mega dam – Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which is 76% complete.
Reports show that in Ethiopia currently more than half of the 110 million people do not have access to electricity, while some industries have not been able to fully operate due to frequent power outages. The total amount of electricity that the country is generating at the moment is estimated at about 4,300 megawatts, of which the majority is hydroelectric power. When GERD is completed after a few years, it is expected to double the country’s current energy.
