South Africa reported 2,055 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the number of confirmed infections to 657,627, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced Friday night.
Mkhize said that 85 people died from the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 15,857.
Over the past six weeks, South Africa has seen a decline in cases, recording fewer than 2,000 infections a day.
Two months ago, it registered about 12,000 daily cases.
“Today marks another milestone in South Africa’s fight against COVID-19. The cumulative number of tests carried out to date has exceeded 4 million, ”he said.
Mkhize said 586,844 people have recovered from the virus.
Despite having the highest number of confirmed cases on the continent and being the eighth most affected country globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) praised South Africa for its determined efforts that have helped curb the spread of the virus.
The WHO said Thursday that it is highly encouraged by the nation’s ongoing measures to suppress the spread of COVID-19.
“To tackle the pandemic, South Africa took decisive steps, including instituting response coordination mechanisms at all levels, establishing control interventions for all critical pillars of response, and imposing social and public health measures, including movement restrictions. , curfews and business closings, “he said.
The global health body also said that strong public health measures in place helped limit the exponential spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and allowed the country to establish capabilities for testing, isolation, case treatment and tracing, as well as quarantine contacts.
WHO praised the country’s strong commitment and leadership as strong pillars that have helped combat the pandemic.
South Africa’s strong healthcare system, health science research and diagnostic capabilities have also provided a solid foundation for the response to COVID-19 in the country and the region, he said.
