Samsung expands the range of Isocell image sensors for conventional smartphones

Samsung Electronics introduced four new Samsung Isocell image sensors for its 0.7 micrometer (μm) pixel product line: the 108 megapixel Isocell HM2, the 64MP Isocell GW3, the 48MP Isocell GM5 and the 32MP Isocell JD1. To collect a large amount of light and increase the overall well capacity despite the tiny pixel sizes, Samsung incorporated its advanced Isocell Plus and Smart-ISO technologies, specially optimized for 0.7 μm. Isocell Plus retains received light with a wall-like structure around the pixel, while Smart-ISO makes full use of incoming light by intelligently adjusting the ISO accordingly for optimal exposure.

In the latest 0.7 μm products to be introduced later in 2020, Samsung said it will begin implementing an improved pixel technology, Isocell 2.0, which enables excellent performance despite challenges with decreasing pixel size . The new technology further improved the wall structure between the cells, resulting in additional light sensitivity of up to 12 percent compared to current Isocell Plus technology.

The Samsung Isocell HM2, GW3 and JD1 are currently in mass production, and the company is testing the GM5.
