Google Duo is a video calling app created by Google that is available for Android phones, iPhones, tablets, computers, and smart displays. Now, Google has added another category of devices: smart TVs with Android TV.
Yes, Google Duo is now available for Android TV four years after the app’s release. Google teased the app’s arrival on Thursday, saying it will be available in beta for Android TV. However, the Play Store listing on Android TV did not say that the app is still in beta.
If your TV has a built-in camera then you can make video calls, but if your TV doesn’t have a camera, you can only make voice calls. Another option is to get a webcam, as the Android TV platform (as of Android 9) now has native support for webcams.
There is something important to note about the new feature. After installation, the application does not appear in the application drawer nor does it have a banner on the home screen. The only way I could start it is by going to Settings> Applications> Duo. Hopefully an update will fix this.
When you make a voice call, the remote control’s microphone picks up your voice, while the voice of the person you are calling can be heard from the TV’s own speaker or any speaker connected to the TV.
The fact that Android TV supports Google Duo makes sense, especially now that video calling is now more popular with people.
