NETFLIX Faces Massive Subscriber Boycott Over Decision To Present Controversial French Film Cute on the streaming platform.
The film, whose title translates as Cuties in English, it focuses on an 11 years Senegalese girl who is trapped between the traditional val of her Muslim familyues and Internet culture.
French-Senegalese filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré won the Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival for the movie, which represents her debut characteristic.
Critics were quick to praise the film. to address serious and worrying issues about the growing hypersexualization of pre-adolescent girls with sharpness and nuances.
However, a backlash has grown against Cuties in the months that followed, with critics on social media accusing the film of portraying its young stars in a sexualized road.
The criticism began in August, when Netflix was forced to remove the artwork it had put in place to promote the film prior to its launch on the platform, with many calling the images “inappropriate.”
The backlash reappeared in recent days after the film’s debut on the streaming service.
#CancelNetflix It has also become the main trend on Twitter, with more than 200,000 tweets containing the hashtag posted in the last 24 hours.
Several American politicians have also joined calls for Netflix to be boycotted by the film.
California Republican Beatrice Cárdenas tweeted: “As the mother of an 8 year old girl, I STRONGLY support #CancelNetflix. “
Another Republican politician, Omar Navarro, tweeted: “The hypersexualization of girls (and boys) is disgusting. It is morally and ethically reprehensible. “
Avengers and Creed Star Tessa Thompson has come out in defense of the film, which she insists is “beautiful.”
“She brings a new voice to the helm. She is a French Senegalese black woman who draws her experiences,” she said.
“The film comments on the hypersexualization of pre-adolescent girls. Disappointed to see the current speech. Disappointed to see how it ranks in terms of marketing.
“I understand everyone’s answer. But it doesn’t relate to the movie I saw.”

A Netflix spokesperson has also moved to try and to calm some of the concerns expressed online.
“Cuties is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” they said.
“It is an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure girls face on social media and from society in general as they grow up, and we encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the film.”
