The beauty of Huawei MateBook X 2020 comes with some compromises

Huawei is perhaps best known for its smartphones and network hardware, but it also has other products for consumers, including laptops. On its own, Huawei’s MateBook X seemed ready to take on the biggest gamers, in particular Apple’s MacBook line, with its combination of design, performance, and features that tie in with the Huawei and Honor smartphones. Its 2020 iteration of the MateBook X may turn out to be one of the best yet, but it could unfortunately be dead when it hits markets where it will even be available.

The defining feature of the Huawei MateBook X 2020 will likely be its 13.8-inch display that boasts a 90% screen-to-body ratio, thanks to the removal of metal frames and some bezels. It’s also no bigger than a sheet of A4 paper, and its 1kg, 13.6mm thick makes it one of the thinnest laptops on the market.

It’s not far behind in the performance department either, powered by a 10th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU with up to 16GB of RAM. However, the highlight in the specs department is Wi-Fi 6, a first for Huawei laptops. There’s a 42 Wh battery that Huawei advertises should last for 9 hours of video playback, but that sounds like a very generous estimate.

However, this combination of power and beauty doesn’t come without its price. For one thing, there’s no room for anything else on that 3K screen, which means the webcam has been relocated to one of those hidden keyboard pop-up keys. There are no ports other than two USB-C ports and a headphone jack, and there are also no fans to ensure that the CPU is not throttled by heat.

Of course, those commitments could be moot in markets like the US, where Huawei’s products can no longer officially step foot. Given the company’s current dire situation, it may only be a matter of time before the same uncertainty plaguing its mobile business hits its computers, leaving the MateBook X 2020 and its descendants as nothing more than pretty laptops exclusive to. China.
