Google released the Android 11 Go edition for low-power entry-level devices, following the release of Android 11 earlier this week.
The tech giant is touting that the latest update to the Android Go edition will make apps launch 20% faster compared to the previous iteration, allowing users to switch between apps without their devices getting stuck.
Like Android 11, the latest update to the Go edition of Android includes new privacy enhancements, such as unique permissions, where users will be able to grant an application access to specific sensors such as the microphone, camera or location for a single instance. . Other privacy improvements include “soft reset” app permissions for apps that haven’t been used for an extended period of time and the introduction of Safe Folder, a new feature that allows users to protect specific files from being opened or accessed. storing them in a 4-digit PIN encrypted folder.
The update will also give Android 11 Go edition devices access to gesture-based navigation.
While Android 11 is currently available for devices in Google’s Pixel line: Pixel 2 and later, OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Realme, Android 11 Go edition will be available for all new devices with up to 2GB of memory.
Since the Android Go edition was released in 2017, more than 100 million entry-level devices have installed the operating system, Google said.
When the operating system was first released, Google said the goal was to ensure that people with lower socioeconomic backgrounds could have access to computing.
“To ensure that billions more people can access computing, it is important that entry-level devices are fully functional smartphones that can browse the web and use applications,” said Sagan Kamdar, managing director of Android products at that time.
