Google has officially released Android 11, the latest version of the company’s mobile operating system, and Android Auto users are also getting a major update.
Starting with this new version of Android, wireless Android Auto is available to everyone, as long as they have a compatible head unit.
In previous versions of the operating system, Android Auto’s wireless mode was only offered to owners of Google Pixel and Samsung phones. But starting with Android 11, the Mountain View-based search giant has decided to unlock the same functionality for everyone with a device running this new version.
Obviously, a compatible head unit is still required, but at least you’re no longer forced to get a Google Pixel or Samsung phone to run Android Auto without a cable.
“Android Auto now works wirelessly for all Android 11 phones, as long as you have a compatible vehicle. So you can take the best of your phone with you on every trip while skipping the cable: get one-touch directions, talk to text, play your favorite media, and get help from the Google Assistant,Dave Burke, Android’s vice president of engineering, confirmed in an announcement a few minutes ago.
So what phones can you use to switch to wireless Android Auto today?
As expected, the Google Pixel is one of the options, and the second generation and newer models are getting the update to Android 11. In other words, even if you own an older Pixel 2, wireless Android Auto is still available with a compatible vehicle.
Several other phone manufacturers are also rushing to roll out Android 11 on their devices, so today you can update your OnePlus, Xiaomi and OPPO phone to the new version of the mobile operating system (although only some models get it on the first day, with the launch gradually advance). Everyone else is expected to ship the Android 11 update and enable wireless Android Auto on their devices in the coming months.
