OnePlus has been releasing a ‘Pro’ model of its smartphones since the OnePlus 7 Pro, the latest being the OnePlus 8 Pro. These ‘Pro’ phones are priced higher and contain a few extra goodies to justify that premium. However, it looks like we may not get a ‘OnePlus 8T Pro’ this year when the company launches the OnePlus 8T later this year. We’ve already seen a seemingly official version of the OnePlus 8T and its key specs have leaked as well, but so far, the rumor has been suspiciously quiet about the OnePlus 8T Pro. Now, prominent insider Max J. has shared that a ‘OnePlus 8T Pro ‘is not in the pipeline for the company.
The leaker first made a cryptic post stating that ‘Kebab2’ has been canceled or will not arrive. Now Kebab is reportedly the codename for OnePlus 8T, but so far, no evidence has appeared of another model called “Kebab2” or “Kebabp.” OnePlus has so far followed a similar naming scheme for its smartphone duo, and the absence of a ‘Kebab2’ in the firmware files is a sign that a ‘OnePlus 8T Pro’ is not on the table. And if that was cryptic, the insider went on to clarify in the comment section that a ‘OnePlus 8T Pro’ won’t be coming at all.
Why does it make sense?
The ‘Pro’ devices in the OnePlus’ lineup are known to pack the best hardware out there and offer a significant upgrade over non-Pro models to justify the price gap. But given that the OnePlus 8 Pro is already a fully featured device, the space to upgrade it and launch a completely different model sounds a bit unreasonable. The only notable update OnePlus can do would be to replace the Snapdragon 865 inside the OnePlus 8 Pro with the new Snapdragon 865+. But the performance gap between the two chipsets is not too high, and the Snapdragon 865 would be perfectly operational for at least the next two years.
Sure, there’s always room for improvement in the camera department, but instead of accepting a ‘new’ phone whose cameras offer only a higher megapixel count, I’d rather wait for OnePlus to take longer, tweak both hardware and software, and then feature it on the OnePlus 9 Pro with more significant updates. Or simply put, take your time and put all that experience and innovation inside the OnePlus 9 Pro. Also, making a phone (read: OnePlus 8 Pro) that costs almost a thousand dollars in a generation by releasing an updated model only after six months does not suit everyone.
