AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly surprised F1 fans with a surprise victory over favorites Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel.
Pierre Gasly stunned the Formula One world by winning his first race, the first Frenchman since 1996 to do so, at the young age of 24. The Frenchman secured victory for AlphaTauri with deft maneuvering on the final lap, keeping McLaren’s Carlos Sainz, who had been hot on his heels in a tense and dramatic final stage, at bay.
The victory was also a first for AlphaTauri, Red Bull’s junior team. Their only other victory had occurred in 2008, when they were known as Toro Rosso.
Gasly stood his ground where so many other big names were hit by bad luck. Favorite to win, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton took the lead early on, but finished seventh after being hit by a stop-start penalty in the middle of the event. The six-time world champion was fined for ignoring the “closed” signs in the pit lane after Kevin Magnussen’s Haas was stopped. However, Lewis finishing seventh was quite remarkable as he started behind the pack in 17th place and worked his way back onto the field. For a while, it was exciting to watch him and it seemed like he could pull off a miracle, but waiting for him to regain leadership again was too much.
Lewis Hamilton’s record chase has to wait, for now
Hamilton is looking for several of the great Michael Schumacher’s records and he was the big favorite in the race. Still, the British rider has managed to secure some big strides of late, including most consecutive race starts, total pole positions, most podiums and total career points. Lewis just won the Belgian Grand Prix and is just two wins out of Schumacher’s total of 91, a record Lewis is sure to break soon.
The disaster continued to hit others as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen withdrew the race due to mechanical problems, a major disappointment for one of the leading title contenders.
Ferrari has taken a big hit lately and both drivers were out of their home grand prix, with Charles Leclerc crashing, causing a suspension of the race at one point.
This, combined with the fact that Sebastian Vettel also withdrew from the race due to a brake failure, dashing all of Ferrari’s hopes at the Italian Grand Prix.
But in the end, Pierre Gasly’s victory was a breakthrough that validated the enormous challenges he faced since Red Bull demoted him to the AlphaTauri team and the loss of one of his closest friends, Antoine Hubert.
After the French anthem was played, followed by the Italian for his ecstatic Italian team AlphaTauri, Gasly sat on the podium at Monza, overwhelmed.
It was a wild race, which resulted in a podium of winners that few predicted, with Carlos Sainz in second place followed by Canadian Lance Stroll.
“Honestly, it’s amazing. I am not realizing what is happening right now, ”said Pierre Gasly after the race, according to Jalopnik.com. “It was such a crazy race and we took advantage of the red flag. The car was fast, we had a pretty fast car behind us. I’ve been through a lot in the last 18 months. Even with my podium last year, it was like ‘wow’. I have no words. This team has done a lot for me. They gave me my first chance in F1, they gave me my first podium, now they gave me my first victory.
The next Formula One event will be the Tuscan Grand Prix, which will take place at the Mugello Circuit on September 13. Stay tuned here for all their Formula One news.
