# 1: 6.3 quake: 12 Km SE From Tongoy (Chile), 6 Sep 2020 01h1637 reports

Another major earthquake hit the western coast of Chile last night at 9:16 pm local time. The earthquake had a depth of 25 km and its epicenter was 12 km SE of Tongoy in the Coquimbo region, 430 km north of Santiago.
Strong ground tremors occurred in areas up to 50 km away from the epicenter, but slight to weak tremors could be felt over a vast area up to several hundred kilometers away.
There are no reports of injuries or major damage, mainly due to the fact that there are no towns in the immediate vicinity of the earthquake.
A similar but stronger magnitude 7 earthquake had occurred 5 days earlier, 266 kilometers to the north. It could be that earthquakes are currently propagating south along the Pacific – South America tectonic plate margin.
