TPLF-Amhara-disputeSeptember 4, 2020 (Ezega.com) – The Raya Rayuma Democratic Party accused the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of participating in forced assimilation and causing an identity crisis against the Raya people in a measure to strengthen regional autonomy.

The party has called on the federal government to deploy a national defense force in southern Tigray to defend the rights of those who resisted participating in the controversial Tigray elections.

The federal government has yet to respond amid growing complaints about the identity of people in Raya and Walqaite Tegede in south and west Tigray who claimed to belong to the Amhara region.

“TPLF cadres go door to door and insist that Raya people acquire new IDs as citizens of Tigray and participate in elections to leave the area,” party chairman Agizew Hidaru told local media.

“We do not accept the Addis Ababa government if it continues to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to the murders and aggressions of our people. TPLF has detained 2,150 people from Raya and this time tensions are high in Raya-Azebo, Raya -Osla and Raya-Alamata as TPLF is running for “illegal” elections, ”he said.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and officials from the Amhara region are charged with negligence and complicity in alleged mass arrests and human rights violations by the TPLF against the people of Raya and the ethnic Amhara people in Walqaite Tegede in the west of Tigray, according to these opposition forces.

“People in Raya, Wajrat, Telemt and Tegede have expressed their fear of losing Ethiopian citizenship and have once again called on the federal and Amhara governments to intervene,” the president said.

The party claimed that TPLF is running to establish a de facto separate state. All opposition parties running in the region’s elections also promote the establishment of the “Greater Tigray” after the elections are held.

The Federal House of the Federation (HOF) called an emergency meeting on Saturday, September 5, 2020, after its officials received complaints from the Raya and Wolkait-Tegede Identity and Geographical Restoration committees and the Raya political party Rayuma.

People in Raya and Wolkait-Tegede claim that their territories were annexed by the TPLF from the Amhara region after the TPLF-led government took power 29 years ago.

They claimed that in the process of annexation, the identity, history and cultural composition of Raya and Wolkait-Tegede has been taken away, rewritten and completely decimated by the TPLF and its state machine, “the committees claimed.

TPLF, for its part, said that Wolkait-Tegede was annexed from the Tigray region in the political conspiracy during the rule of Emperor Haileselassie.

The Tigray region said more than 2.7 million people were registered to vote in a separate election scheduled for September 9, 2020.
